What to do in this situation?
I'm trying to help a friend of mine deal with creditors. She moved out of an apartment complex 2 months ago and she broke lease. She made an agreement with the manager that if she paid for the first month she got free along with the discount they gave her she would be able to break lease without having to pay the hefty termination fee. She paid the amount and now 2 months later she gets a call from a creditor stating she owes her former apartment money. The former apartment didn't try to contact her or send her any sort of statement. They just sent it to creditors who gave her the statement. Would the creditors giving her the detailed statement be considered debt validation? Also the creditors are stating if she pays the amount (cleaning fee) they can dispute the other charges. Are they trying to trick her? Is it legal to not notify someone about a sum and just send it to creditors? She's tried calling her former apartment complex but they aren't taking her calls. The weirdest thing is that they attached all of her contact information to the statement they gave the creditors, but didn't bother contacting her. Thanks!
